Abstract :
In the modern world, where transnational migration has been transformed due to global dynamics, marriage migration remains one of the main ways of settling abroad – permanently or temporarily – and is a field of research attracting growing attention. From the Sylhet area of Bangladesh, many people migrate to the UK and other European countries, the USA, the Middle East and other developed countries. Secondary migration through marriage is, therefore, becoming an issue of special importance and plays a pivotal role in Sylhet. Marriage migration has a profound impact on the families of both spouses and the society in which they live. The present study explores the determinants of marriage migration and its effects on family and society. The study findings not only indicate the prospects and advantages of international marriage migration but also identify the many harsh realities that may entail. Sometimes the bride or bridegroom becomes trapped by the restrictions imposed by their spouse after marriage migration. This article thus describes both the good and the bad experiences of marriage migration of people from the Sylhet region of Bangladesh.
