Abstract :
The performance of the agricultural sector has a huge effect on the economy of Bangladesh. It creates jobs, reduces poverty, improves human resources, and ensures enough food for everyone. Choosing and using pesticides correctly is the biggest obstacle to successful and sustainable farming. Because peasants mainly depend on pesticide dealers and the indigenous healing system, this study explores factors related to pesticide selection and usage that negatively impact the environment and health. We used a qualitative study design and conducted twenty in-depth interviews with peasants who grew and sold vegetables at the market. In ten key informant interviews, we also talked to pesticide dealers, local pesticide sellers, schoolteachers, and community health workers. We took notes on how pesticides were used in the field. The open code list was generated and clustered into different sub-themes and major themes following the thematic analysis. Results revealed that peasants used pesticides to maximize production and profit. They selected and used the pesticides as the sellers suggested. Crop producers collect vegetables for selling at the market immediately after spraying pesticides. The peasants are unaware of pesticide use and do not know about the adverse side effects on health and the
environment. Policymakers should consider the simple method of pesticide selection and usage to improve food security through sustainable agricultural production.
