Abstract :
Coastal areas of Bangladesh are affected by salinity intrusion and sources of safe drinking water in these areas are very inadequate, which is much lower compared to non-coastal other areas of the country. This study explores adaptation options, coping strategies and their challenges to scarcity of safe drinking water in the south- western coastal region of Bangladesh. Taking the vulnerability assessment framework approaches into consideration, this study has been conducted following the methodological triangulation (mix of qualitative and quantitative approach). And a total number of 285 respondents were selected randomly for face-to-face survey interviews fromĀ the community of Shyamnagor and Assasuni Upazila of Satkhira district. In addition, Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) were followed to understand the experience of the coastal communities. This paper has, thereby, explored the dynamics and mechanism of coping and adaptation to the scarcity of drinking water in the coastal area of Bangladesh and suggests that it is critical to redesign a release model to achieve better outcomes and ensure the effectiveness of coping and adapting to the situation.
