Abstract :

Bangladesh is one of the most tectonically active regions in the world. It rests where three tectonic plates meet. Recent occurrences of several frequent minor tremors indicate that Bangladesh is at high risk of a devastating earthquake. Most of the buildings in Bangladesh are not constructed following current building codes and in the majority, seismic behavior is not taken into consideration. So, it has become quite vital to quantify earthquake risks and to develop a strategy that will be followed during the design period. For architectural purposes, the use of shear walls has become very popular. In this study, a comparison of its effectiveness is discussed. The method used for describing vulnerability is “Pushover” analysis. It provides an estimate of the structure's side-sway to base shear. The primary focus of the study is to provide a guideline for developing pushover curves for RC frame structures and Shear wall structures. And finally, a relative comparison between their seismic performance according to both BNBC 2020 and BNBC 2006.
